Coding Terminology

• Signal element: Pulse

• Signal Rate: 1/Duration of the smallest element =Baud rate

• Data Rate: Bits per second

• Data Rate = F(Bandwidth, encoding, ...)

  • Bounds given by Nyquist and Shannon theorems…

• Eg signaling schemes: Non-return to Zero (NRZ), Manchester coding etc
